Kia S. Smith named one of Carol Fox and Associates Cultural Catalysts: 30 WOMEN WHO IMPACT CHICAGO’S ART AND ENTERTAINMENT SCENES

“Last year’s premiere of Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley proved a perfect showcase for choreographer and director Kia Smith. The evening-length “dance opera” exemplified her choreographic voice—note-by-note precision, fluid torso movement, unexpected gesture, powerful unison—and marked the debut of her 7-year-old company, South Chicago Dance Theatre, at the Auditorium Theatre, its largest venue to date.”

Kia S Smith named one of Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch

“…Smith’s agenda is to create global-communal networks to help dancers and audiences connect with other cultures.”

WTTW Review For Chicago Opera Theater Collaboration

“Zambello maximizes the laughs, nicely matching visual gags with the innate comedy in the libretto, and infuses the big crowd scenes with zany pandemonium. One of her best ideas is the addition of six talented, white-garbed dancers who move set pieces, provide a connecting line between scenes and sometimes even interact with the main players, notably a funny dance scene with the Nose.”

Chicago SunTimes Review For Chicago Opera Theater Collaboration

“Dancers inserted into an opera often prove an unwonted distraction but The Nose needs all the help it can get. Six members of the South Chicago Dance Theatre livened up the visuals with their energetic presence and Terpsichorean contributions to the frenetic action.”

Hyde Park Herald Review For Chicago Opera Theater Collaboration

“The very busy South Chicago Dance Theatre and/or its founder, Executive Artistic Director Kia S. Smith, have collaborated over the past year with the Chicago Opera Theater, Music of the Baroque and Giordano Dance Chicago; appeared in pretty much every local multi-company showcase of dance; and ran the theater’s own dance festival this past November. The company, only six years old, sold out its fifth anniversary show at the not-small Harris Theater in May 2022. Somehow, Smith also found the time to choreograph an evening-length work that’s about to have its world premiere at an even bigger venue: “Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley,” about the legacy of Smith’s father, saxophonist Jimmy Ellis. The accompanying score of jazz standards will be played live.”

Crains Chicago Business

“Alternately exuberant, eccentric and deeply troubling, this “Memoir” suggested the emotional heat and beat so elemental to “that thing called jazz.”

WTTW

“The sheer physicality of the two-act performance was astonishing. In a few seconds, the versatile SCDT dancers could transform from human marionettes sprawled flat onstage to swiftly soaring, airborne athletes. At one point, Taylor Yocum balanced on her right foot, lifted her left knee close to her chin, and clasped both hands beneath her left foot before continuing her fluid strides forward. It was a blink-and-you-miss-it move that reflected the levels of strength, stamina and limberness required to be in a company like SCDT.”

Downbeat Magazine

“The ensemble is made of dancers dedicated to their craft who are also actors, giving the roles gravitas. This journey through the South Side of the 1960s and ’70s requires gravitas and a dedication to authenticity and to jazz music.”

Third Coast Review

“Smith’s first evening-length piece, “Memoirs…” is a tour de force and a sensory immersion into this artist’s creative well-springs. ”

“If Gus represents the past and dancers leaving are the present, what is the future? The answer is celebrating community by asking Kia Smith, executive artistic director of South Chicago Dance Theatre (SCDT) and current “It” girl on the Chicago dance scene to choreograph a world premiere as a gift to honor one of the city’s favorite and longtime teachers, Homer Bryant. “Luminescence.””

Kia S. Smith named a rising star by Chicago Magazine.

“Remember their names. These rising stars in the arts, sports, politics, and more are bound for big things in Chicago—and beyond. Smith knew by age 5 that she wanted to run a dance company — and that it was going to be on the South Side. She grew up in South Shore, Washington Heights, and Kenwood, and her father, Jimmy Ellis, helped start the storied Hyde Park Jazz Festival, as well as the iconic South Side tradition Jazz in the Alley. That inspired Smith’s next venture: Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley, an evening-length dance opera set to premiere at the Auditorium Theatre in June.”

Chicago Magazine

Kia S. Smith named Player of the Moment for 2023 in the category of Dance by New City Magazine.

“Meteoric is too mild a word for the rise of Kia Smith and South Chicago Dance Theatre. A fleet of rocket emojis seems more descriptive. Smith and SCDT are riding the momentum to their Auditorium Theatre debut in 2023 with a new piece by Smith, “Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley.” The prolific Smith has a stack of choreographic commissions for other companies this year as well—notably for Houston Contemporary in January and Giordano Dance Chicago in the spring. ”

Achieving Equity Through Art MacArthur Foundation Blog Post

“For Smith racial equity means, in part, pay equity. She is launching salaried, 40-week contracts for dancers instead of paying them by the performance and rehearsal. Racial equity also is the ability for all people, no matter what they look like or where they come from, to hold the reins of their own story,” she said, “rather than imposing an experience, attitude, or expectation on a person, allowing them the privilege and freedom to navigate the world in a way that is authentic for them.”

SCDT’s Elijah Richardson named one of Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch for 2023.

“With quirky charisma and an infectious smile, Elijah Richardson burst onto Chicago’s dance scene in 2018. But it was last year that he made an indelible mark, delivering a masterful performance in South Chicago Dance Theatre’s smash hit, five-year anniversary concert at the Harris Theater—just two years and a pandemic after he worked there as an usher.”

Best dance of 2022: Local companies bounce back from pandemic while big tours finally land in Chicago

“Energy and heart were on tap for this emerging powerhouse’s fifth-anniversary extravaganza at the Harris Theater in May. Fearless and tireless, director Kia Smith stepped into that great big venue for the first time — and sold it out. How? Audacious performances of bold works by some of the city’s finest choreographers: Chicago Repertory Ballet’s Wade Schaaf and River North Dance Chicago alums Stephanie Martinez and Ron De Jesus.”

Chicago Tribune

“The colorful performance—choreographed by Kia S. Smith who founded the troupe in 2017—merged the 17th century music with the 21st century sensibilities of modern dance, with bends and angles and stretches rather than balletic leaps and spins, and it received a warm reception from the audience.”

Third Coast Review

“The program began with six dances from “Terpsichore”, as performed by the South Chicago Dance Theatre and brilliantly choreographed by Kia S. Smith. Borrowing from French and German styles, this set of modern dances featured eight performers—Kelly Anderson, Amaya Arroyo, Mya Bryant, Kim Davis, Hayley Midea, Lourdes Taylor, Marissa Thomas, and Taylor Yocum—who each wore the same beautifully flowing dress: two in white, two in red, two in gray, one in navy blue, and one in plum. Solo artists Midea, Yocum, Anderson, and Davis led the troupe with their grace, artistry, and athleticism. These dancing sprites catapulted themselves by leaps and bounds into the hearts of the audience. The choreography was novel in how the dancers repositioned themselves during silent breaks, and then they acted as a team at one moment and as individuals the next whenever the music played. A superior dance merges order, design, composition, tension, and balance, and all these elements were present—and more!” Around Town Chicago

“…the dancers’ movements were consistently well timed by Smith to the music, and all were supremely graceful individually and seamlessly coordinated as an ensemble.” Around Town Chicago

Building a dance career with SCDT’s Executive Artistic Director Kia S. Smith – Dance Magazine Feature June 2022

“The program had a relatively small company of dancers performing demanding works in succession with no drop in quality or hint of fatigue. Their stamina was impressive, but not surprising. This work ethic is emblematic of the company itself. In only five short years, Smith and SCDT have built up an impressive string of top-notch performances, several outreach and educational programs and have gathered an impressive repertoire of work—just imagine where they will be in another five years! Whatever direction the company takes, I’m looking forward to it.” – See Chicago Dance 2022

“One of Smith’s strengths is her ability to match movement to music. The legato lines in Montgomery’s music had long, smooth movements to match, at times spiced up with jerky physical interjections as punctuation points. There was great quivering and lots of rapid movement to complement the baroque section, which featured “Winter” from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”.”- Review 2021
